Geographical location: is composed of two separate parts in Sarawak state of Malaysia. Apart from the North bordered by the East Sea (161 kilometers of coach) and the rest three directions having borders with the East of Malaysia (381 kilometers).

Topography: Brunei topography comprises the coastal plain, mountainous area to the East and low hills to the West.   

Area: 5.769 sq km consisting of 70% of forest, 160 km of coastline including 500 sq km of water and 5,269 sq km of mainland.

Climate: tropical, hot, humid with only two seasons- rainy and dry seasons. The average temperature is at 24 to 32 Celsius degree. 

Natural resources: oil, natural gas and wood

Population: more than 429,000 (according to data of worldpopulationreview.com)

Language: Malaysian is the first language. Besides, the Bruneian use English and Chinese.

Religion: Sunni Islam is predominant religion with 67%, the remaining are Buddhism (13%), Christian (10%) and others (10%).

Political institution: The Brunei politics is a monarchy. Roles and power of the Sultan is absolute. The sultan is both head of state and head of government (Prime Minister, Minister of Military and Minister of Finance) and decides almost every major issues of the country.

Economy

Before 1929, Brunei had been in severe poverty. Its economics mainly depended on small resource of rubber with low productivity. Since 1929, the discovery of natural oil and gas has brought about great wealth for the country. Currently, oil and gas account for 80% of gross national income (GNI) and 90% of export income, contributing to 39% of its GDP. Brunei is the third largest petroleum producer in the South East Asia, after Indonesia and Malaysia with about 180,000 barrels per day. It is also the fourth largest producer of liquid petroleum gas worldwide.

Brunei is country with small yet wealthy economy. Industry makes up for 46% of GDP, agriculture is 5% and service is 49%. GDP per capita of Brunei is much higher than other countries in the South East Asia particularly and the world generally. With huge income from oil and gas export and small population, the government of Brunei has good condition to carry out some social welfare policies for its people.

Culture and society

Culture of Brunei is strongly influenced by Malaysia and Indonesia, which are close to Brunei in both geographical position and history.

Life of the Bruneian has been under enormous influence from Islam and Hindu. As Islam is its official religion, there are variety of Islamic festivals such as Ramadhan or Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival. Many architectural buildings retain rich cultural features of Islam i.e. the mosques having special architecture with white marble and magnificent gilt pyramidal roofs.

The literacy rate accounts for 88.2% of population. Male is 92.6% and female is 83.4%.

 Education at all levels is covered by the state even overseas study. Malay, Chinese and English are taught in primary and secondary schools. Public health service is pretty good and paid by government.

Average life expectancy is 73.58 (male: 71.23; female: 76.05)
